Israel Strikes Beirut and Orders Mass Evacuation in Southern Lebanon as Conflict with Hezbollah Escalates
Israel Orders Evacuation in Southern Lebanon Amid Intensifying Conflict
The conflict between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah has intensified sharply after Israel issued a sweeping evacuation order for large parts of southern Lebanon while launching new airstrikes in the capital city, Beirut.
According to the Israeli military, residents living within roughly 25 miles of the border were instructed to move north of the Zahrani River for their safety. The order affected several towns, villages, and major cities, including the southern Lebanese city of Nabatieh.
Military officials said the evacuation was necessary before a planned wave of airstrikes targeting what Israel described as Hezbollah military infrastructure.
Airstrikes Hit Central Beirut
Shortly after issuing the evacuation warnings, the Israel Defense Forces carried out airstrikes in central Beirut. Two buildings in the Zouq Blat neighborhood were destroyed after residents were warned to leave the area.
One of the targeted buildings was located near a shelter that was housing displaced civilians. The strike triggered panic among families who had already fled their homes due to the fighting in southern Lebanon.
The second building struck during the operation was located near government offices, including the prime minister’s office, as well as facilities used by international organizations and foreign embassies.
Mass Displacement Across Lebanon
The evacuation orders and ongoing bombardment have created a major humanitarian crisis. Officials estimate that nearly one million people have been internally displaced during just ten days of fighting between Israeli forces and Hezbollah.
Many families have fled to Beirut or other northern regions, but overcrowded shelters and limited housing options have left thousands struggling to find safe places to stay.
Local officials say many residents are unsure where to go next. Some displaced people who initially fled to Beirut have reportedly returned to their villages due to the lack of available accommodation.
Hezbollah Launches Rockets Toward Israel
The escalation followed a series of large-scale attacks by Hezbollah against Israel. According to Israeli authorities, the group launched more than 200 rockets and drones toward Israeli territory overnight.
Several projectiles targeted cities and military bases across Israel, including areas near Haifa, Tel Aviv, and Beersheba.
Israel’s advanced air defense systems intercepted many of the rockets, though some landed in open areas. Authorities reported that at least two people were injured during the attacks.
Regional Tensions Continue to Rise
Reports from Iranian media outlets suggest that Iran may have coordinated some of the attacks alongside Hezbollah. Statements from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed that the operation involved joint missile and drone strikes aimed at Israeli military targets.
If confirmed, such coordination would represent a significant escalation in the regional conflict, raising concerns about a wider confrontation across the Middle East.
Military analysts warn that the ongoing exchange of strikes between Israel and Hezbollah could quickly spiral into a broader regional war if tensions continue to escalate.
Civilians Caught in the Middle
Residents living near the border areas have described terrifying scenes as explosions and air defense interceptions lit up the night sky.
People in Israeli border towns reported hearing loud explosions as rockets were intercepted overhead, while residents in southern Lebanon and Beirut experienced continuous airstrikes throughout the night.
Emergency responders in affected areas say many buildings have been heavily damaged, with streets filled with debris and smoke from the bombardments.
Global Calls for De-Escalation
International leaders and diplomatic organizations have called for immediate restraint from all parties involved. The rapidly deteriorating security situation has raised fears that the conflict could expand beyond Lebanon and Israel, potentially affecting the wider Middle East region.
For now, both sides remain on high alert, while civilians on both sides of the border continue to face uncertainty and danger as the conflict shows little sign of slowing.
