Anthony Richardson Sr. day to day with dislocated pinkie finger sustained in preseason opener

The Indianapolis Colts started Anthony Richardson Sr. the first preseason game. But it was short lived. On Richardson first dropback of the Colts second series, he could not notice that Baltimore raven linebacker, David Ojabo, was running a blitz to his right. Richardson brought on the sack: Ojabo blamed him. Richardson popped slowly up, and walked off the field to the sideline where he dropped to his knees, yelling in pain with what was subsequently reported to be a dislocated pinkie finger on his throwing hand. Colts head coach Shane Steichen told the media after the game Richardson was day-to-day and that his dislocated pinkie finger was popped back into place, viaMike Garafolo of NFL Media. It means Richardson did not suffer a serious injury that would force him out for some time. Richardson said he was not worried, and blamed himself even to the extent of accepting the sack.

Daniel Jones was in and Richardson was on the sideline with an earpiece listening to play. Richardson was going to play too the first quarter and possibly into the second but the sack and injury altered that.

It was yet another unpleasant development when it comes to Richardson and the Colts which has everything to do with how he managed to prove himself to be the starter in Week 1. And a reiteration of the fact that Richardson did not stay healthy during his first two years in the NFL. People even doubted whether he will even be well to participate in the preseason after a shoulder injury. He started training camp in good health, and made the first start of the preseason at quarterback as the Colts began their wave of competition to determine their starter there. Jones was set to make the second preseason start, Steichen said. Nothing has been decided yet as to which quarterback to play in the very first game of the season against Miami Dolphins.

Throughout the offseason the Colts were anticipating an actual competition. This is in part to motivate Richardson after a very poor second season, but also to have an assessment of who provides the team with the better opportunity to win. Steichen came in to this season on the hot seat having failed to make the playoffs in his first two seasons. He needs to demonstrate improvement in this season, and has to find out whether Richardson is the way to it.

Tyler Warren, the first round pick by the Colts, was the actual bright spot on the offence of the team on Thursday. The Penn State tight end had three catches, 40 yards, and seemed the type of impact player and swinger they do not have in the middle of the field. That will be the thing regardless of who is under center; he will be the best pal of both Richardson and Jones when they are getting snaps.
