The government of Germany has stated that the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel should not be considered a matter for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

German officials made the statement as European leaders discussed how to respond to requests from U.S. President Donald Trump for allied support in securing vital shipping routes in the Persian Gulf.

Europe Requests Clarity on US War Strategy

European foreign ministers meeting under the framework of the European Union said they want more details about Washington’s long-term objectives in the conflict.

Germany’s foreign minister Johann Wadephul emphasized that the United States and Israel must clearly define when their military goals would be achieved.

Spokesperson Stefan Kornelius explained that NATO is a defensive alliance designed to protect member states and their territories.

He added that the United States had not consulted Germany or other NATO partners before launching military actions against Iran.

Because of that, Berlin does not currently view the war as an issue requiring NATO involvement.

Estonia’s foreign minister Margus Tsahkna said European allies want to understand the broader plan behind the military campaign.

Meanwhile, Poland signaled it would consider any formal request made through NATO channels.

Polish foreign minister Radek Sikorski said Warsaw would carefully review any proposal submitted through the alliance.

Security Concerns in the Persian Gulf

One of the key issues under discussion is the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route through which a large portion of the world’s oil supply passes.
