UN Peacekeepers Come Under Fire in Southern Lebanon During Patrols
UN peacekeeping troops in southern Lebanon came under gunfire during three separate patrol incidents. No casualties were reported, but the UN warned of violations of Security Council resolutions.
UN Peacekeepers Targeted in Southern Lebanon
Peacekeeping forces operating under the United Nations reported that their patrol units came under gunfire in southern Lebanon during multiple incidents on the same day.
The attacks occurred while troops from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon were conducting routine patrols near their operational positions.
Despite the gunfire, no injuries were reported among the peacekeepers, and patrol activities continued after the incidents.
Three Separate Shooting Incidents Reported
According to a statement released by United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, the patrols were targeted in three separate locations in southern Lebanon.
The incidents reportedly took place in the towns of Yater, Deir Kifa, and Qalawiya.
UN officials stated that the attacks were likely carried out by non-state armed groups operating in the area.
Close-Range Gunfire Raises Concern
The closest shooting incident occurred in Yater, where gunfire was reported to have been fired from a distance of only about five meters from the peacekeeping patrol.
In the other two incidents, shots were fired from distances estimated at around 100 and 200 meters.
The proximity of the gunfire raised concerns about the safety of international peacekeepers operating in the region.
Peacekeepers Returned Fire in Self-Defense
According to the UN mission’s statement, two of the patrol units returned fire in self-defense after being targeted.
After responding to the attack, the peacekeeping units resumed their patrol operations without further escalation.
Officials emphasized that the response was carried out strictly for defensive purposes and in accordance with the mission’s rules of engagement.
Warning Over Weapons Outside State Control
The UN peacekeeping mission also issued a warning regarding the presence of weapons outside the control of the Lebanese government.
Officials said that armed groups operating independently of the state violate international agreements designed to maintain peace and security in the region.
Specifically, the mission referred to United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which prohibits unauthorized armed activity in southern Lebanon.
Attacks on UN Personnel Condemned
The UN emphasized that attacks against peacekeepers represent a serious violation of international humanitarian law.
UNIFIL stressed that its mission is focused on maintaining stability along the border region and supporting peace efforts between Lebanon and Israel.
Any attempt to target peacekeeping forces threatens the safety of international personnel and undermines peacekeeping operations.
Rising Tensions in Southern Lebanon
The incidents come at a time when tensions in southern Lebanon remain high due to the broader regional conflict involving Israel, Iran, and allied groups.
Peacekeeping forces have been closely monitoring the situation in the border region to prevent further escalation and maintain stability.
International observers warn that continued attacks on peacekeeping missions could further complicate the fragile security situation in the area.
